Tachograph - Regulations

The new EU Regulation for digital tachograph specifications was published on the 26th May. Stating the latest rules, regulations and exemptions, the new 2016 regulation outlines what is required for the following features of tachographs:

  • Testing
  • Installation
  • Operation and repair, including supporting components

The document determines the provisions necessary for the uniform application of the following aspects regarding tachographs:

  • recording of the position of the vehicle at certain points during the daily working period of the driver;
  • remote early detection of possible manipulation or misuse of smart tachographs;
  • interface with intelligent transport systems;
  • the administrative and technical requirements for the type-approval procedures, including the security mechanisms.

2014 EU Regulations

The previous regulation published in 2014 focused more on recording equipment in road transport. The main aims of the new regulation was to help to enforce driving times and rest periods to prevent fatigue. Ultimately to promote better road safety and re-enforce the importance of a digital tachograph.

Tachographs have been digital since 2006, providing a more accurate recording and easier storage of data compared to an analogue device. Inspections are quick and simple with the ability to print data at the roadside. The device also record’s speed, driving times and rest periods. The microchip has to be installed to record information efficiently and correctly.
